Under 14-1
- 6/12/09
The West Torrens Under 14 (1) team travelled to Glenelg on Sunday to play the Tigers, where they were up against the highly regarded Tiger (and Cal Ripken) pitcher Ben Keeping. Eagles #2 Lucas Hunter was the first to get on base (on balls)—and subsequently scored on a series of passed balls—to open the Eagles account. Ethan Haylock was walked and Brad Dedrick was hit by a pitch. Connor Foley was out in a 1-3 play for the second out. The Tigers hit back with some good infield fielding for the third out.
Jack Hambly was on the mound for the Eagles, and Ethan Haylock was behind the plate. The Tigers #1 was fielded in a 6-3 play (Pickard-Hunter), then Jack brilliantly fielded a solid drive to get the #2 batter out at first and then struck out the highly regarded #3. Side away in 14 pitches.
End of 1st Innings: West Torrens 1, Glenelg 0
McGarry, Hambly, Bouchier (RBI) and Pickard (RBI) all hit single base hits, with McGarry, Hambly, Bouchier all crossing the plate
At the bottom of the second innings, Hambly had the Tigers #4 field out by McGarry in a 4-3 play, and then McGarry caught a fly ball for the second out. The third out was a good play by catcher Haylock throwing to Hunter at first. Side away in 11 pitches.
End of 2nd Innings: West Torrens 4, Glenelg 0
In the third innings Dedrick, Foley, McGarry, all hit single base hits—but only Foley scored before the Tiger’s pitcher hit back.
Hambly fielded well again to get the Tiger #7 out in another 1-3 play. The #8 hit a single to left field, but was caught stealing by McGarry, and the #9 was out in three straight strikes. Three out in seven pitches. Overall, the first 9 Tiger batters were out in three innings.
End of 3rd Innings: West Torrens 5, Glenelg 0
At the top of the fourth innings Pickard, Hunter and Haylock were all advanced on balls in consecutive at bats (and all scored), while Dedrick, Duval (replacing Foley), McGarry all hit single bases before the innings was over with some running errors.
Lucas Hunter replaced Hambly on the mound and had the #1 batter out swinging, a fly to Hambly at first for the second out, and a fly to McGarry deep at second for the third out—all in 9 pitches.
End of 4th Innings: West Torrens 8, Glenelg 0.
The Glenelg team struck back in the 5th innings, only allowing Byrnes to advance on balls before the third out, and no additional runs on the scoreboard.
For the Tigers, the #4 batter led off with a fly ball that crossed the cones for a double base hit, and followed up with a stolen base to advance to third. However great defence by the Eagles kept him there. The #5 and #7 batters were out swinging, before Mason Pickard took a great diving catch to close the innings, with 2 batters still on base and no runs scored.
End of 5th Innings: West Torrens 8, Glenelg 0.
Haylock, Dedrick (RBI), Duval, McGarry, Hambly (2RBI) and Pickard (2RBI) all had solid single base hits, while Byrnes was hit by a pitch. Leading 13-0, and with the Tiger’s coach not wishing to bat again, the umpire called time and game and reverted the score back to the end of the 5th (8-0).

Eagles U14-1 bats continue to sizzle
The 14 (1)s bats continued to sizzle when they played Woodville in the cool, windy—and sometimes rainy—conditions at home last Sunday.
The ball was given to Mitch Duval to start the pitching for the Eagles, and Sam McGarry was behind the plate for the first time this year.
The Senators batter opened up with some patient batting at the plate. The Senators #1, #3 and #4 batters all had safe one base hits. But some good pitching and fielding restricted Woodville to one run in the innings.
Nathan Byrnes opened the innings for the Eagles, and got on base with a safe hit to centre field. Lucas Hunter then hit a pitch to 2nd base, that saw Nathan Byrnes tagged out, although Lucas reached first. Ethan Haylock then drove a ball deep into right field for a 3 base RBI. Brad Dedrick hit a 2 base RBI to left field. This was followed by Jack Hambly’s fly to right field for the second out. Sam McGarry drove to centre field for a one base RBI before Connor Foley was out at first base.
End of 1st Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 3
The Senator’s #6 batter hit for a safe single baser to centre field. The #7 batter then flied to third base for a good catch by Brad Dedrick. Mitch Duval then struck out the #8 and #9 batters to end the innings in 17 pitches
Will Bourchier came to the plate for the Eagles, but was out on stikes. Mitch Duval was the second batter out in a good 5-3 play by the Senators. This brought the reliable Nathan Byrnes back to bat, who hit another safe one baser to centre field. Lucas Hunter was then walked on balls and Ethan Haylock was hit by a pitch to get bases loaded. Brad Dedrick was walked on balls, which brought Byrnes home for the first run of the innings. Jack Hambly then hit a solid hit to centre field for a one base 2 RBI hit. McGarry then hit to left field for a one baser and Foley was walked on balls, before Bourchier was fielded out at first base.
End of 2ndt Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 7
Lucas Hunter relieved Mitch Duval on the mound and Ethan Haylock relieved Sam McGarry as catcher. The Senator’s #1 batter was out in a good 6-3 play by the Eagles fielders. The #2 then drove a ball that was very well caught by Sam McGarry at short stop for the second out and the #3 was out caught by Lucas. Side away in 8 pitches.
Mitch Duval was at the first Eagles batter up, and drove a ball to centre field for a safe one baser (followed by a passed ball and a stolen base). Nathan Byrnes hit safely to right field for a one base RBI. Lucas Hunter then hit a one baser and Ethan Haylock was then walked on balls. Brad Dedrick hit to left field for a 2RBI single. Mason Pickard (replacing Jack Hambly), Sam McGarry, Connor Foley (RBI) and Will Bourchier (RBI) all hit safely for single bases. Mitch Duval returned to the plate but was out on a 6-3 play.
End of 3rd Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 12
Hunter continued the pitching for the Eagles and got the Senators #4 out on three consecutive strikes. The #5 was out on a well fielded 1-3 play and the #6 batter was walked. Lucas fielded well again to get the third out in another 1-3 play.
Back at the top of the Eagles batting line up, Byrnes fouled a ball that was well caught by the Senator’s catcher. Hunter and Haylock were both out at first base.
End of 4th Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 12
Brad Dedrick came to the mound to close. The Woodville #8 advanced to first on balls, followed by the #9 striking out. At the top of the line-up, the Senators #1 batter hit safely for a single base. Brad then had the #2 out in another good 1-3 play, although the #1 batter scored. The #3 then hit a RBI single, but was forced out at second on the #4’s hit.
Brad Dedrick was the first batter up, but was out on a 6-3 play and Mason Pickard was out at first. Sam McGarry then came to the plate and hit a double to centre field. Connor Foley then hit safely to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball, that saw McGarry score. The Eagles innings ended when Bourchier was struck out.

Big hitting Under 14(1)s
The West Torrens Under 14(1) team played Port Adelaide at home on the junior diamond last Sunday.
Jack Hambly was given the ball to start the pitching and Nathan Byrnes was behind the plate. Jack immediately found the strike zone, and struck the first Magpies player out watching and the second player out swinging. The Magpies #3 then flied a ball to 3rd base, which was well caught by Brad Dedrick. Side away in sixteen pitches.
The Eagles #1 batter Mason Pickard started with a walk to 1st bases, and advanced to second with a Lucas Hunter bunt (and Lucas safely made 1st). Ethan Haylock then played a line drive to right field to get to first, and bring Pickard home. Brad Dedrick was then walked, which brought Pickard home. Jack Hambly then drove a pitch to deep centre field that rolled through the cones for a 2 base 2 RBI hit. Mitch Duval advanced to first on four consecutive balls, before Connor Foley and Will Bourchier were both out on a standard 4-3 plays. Nathan Byrnes hit a pitch to left field for a single base hit. Mason Pickard then returned to the plate and cracked a solid drive to left field for a single base hit that advanced Byrnes to 3rd base.
Lucas Hunter hit a ball to deep left field that allowed Byrnes and Pickard to score, but was out at home plate attempting the infield home run. However, the mercy rule was invoked, so only seven runs counted.
End of the 1st innings: Port Adelaide 0, West Torrens 7
Hambly returned to the mound for the Magpies second innings. The Magpies #4 advanced to first on balls, before Jack came back and struck out the #5 batter. Jack then walked the #6 and #7 batters, before finding his target and striking out the Magpies #9 and #1 batters.
Ethan Haylock smacked a 2 base hit to left field to start the Eagles innings and Brad Dedrick was Hit by Pitch. Hambly drove to third base and was out on a 5-3 play (single RBI-Haylock). This was followed by 2 base RBI (Dedrick). While Connor Foley was at the plate, Duval was picked off at second for the second out, before Foley hit a single to centre field. The innings was out when Will Bourchier was out on a 4-3 play
End of the 2nd innings: Port Adelaide 0, West Torrens 9
Connor Foley relieved Hambly on the mound and struck out the Magpies #2.
A hit by the #3 batter—and a fielding error—saw the Magpie batter advance to 2nd base. A fly ball to 2nd base and another fly to short stop saw the Magpies innings end in 14 pitches.
Sam McGarry came in for Nathan Byrnes and was out on a 4-3. Mason Pickard then had a 2 base hit to right field (followed by a great steal to 3rd base). This brought Lucas Hunter to the plate, who flied to left field for the first out. Haylock then advanced to first on balls. This brought Brad Dedrick to the plate, who has been looking threatening in all matches. Brad then cracked the biggest home run seen in the under 14s for the last couple of seasons. What a monster! Jack drove a one baser to left field and Duval and Foley were then walked. Bourchier then hit a single base RBI double followed by Sam McGarry’s treble deep into right field. This brought up seven runs for the innings.
End of the 3rd innings: Port Adelaide 0, West Torrens 16
Mason Pickard relieved Nathan Byrnes behind the plate in the very hot conditions. Well caught Nathan. Foley continued on the mound for the Eagles. A fielding error allowed the Magpies batter to get safely on second base, before Connor hit back with 3 consecutive strikes.
Brad Dedrick was then given the leather and struck out the Magpies #8. This was followed by a base on ball. A passed ball allowed the Magpies to score their first run before Brad struck out the next batter to close the innings. A good closing pitch by Brad.
The Eagles bats were absolutely burning at the bottom of the 4th innings, with consecutive 2 base hits by Pickard, Hunter, Haylock, Dedrick and Hambly. The Magpies rebounded to get Duval (F3) and Foley (4-3), before Bourchier and McGarry hit single bases. The innings closed when Hunter was out a first.

Eagles 14(1) bats fly down south
The West Torrens Under 14(1) team travelled down south to play the Southern Districts Hawks in warm conditions on Sunday. The Eagles innings opened strongly as the Hawks pitcher struggled to find the strike zone. The first three batters—Mason Pickard, Lucas Hunter and Ethan Haylock—all advanced to first base on balls. Some strong base running saw the Eagles scoreboard start to tick over, as Pickard stole bases and then scored. Number 4 batter Brad Dedrick was swinging well, but unfortunately struck out. Sam McGarry came to the plate and was looking dangerous, but a line drive was fielded by the Hawks first baseman to get the second out, but not before Hunter crossed the plate for the Eagles second run. Mitch Duval showed some great determination at bat, advancing to first base on balls on the seventh pitch. Left hander Connor Foley then drove a ball past first base to get on base, and also bring Haylock home. A great hit to centre field by Nathan Byrnes brought Duval home. Jack Hambly then drove a ball past first base for a 2RBI single (Foley, Byrnes). Mason Pickard returned to the top of the order, and drove a single to get on first. Hunter then drove a two base hit that saw Hambly score for the seventh run, which ended the Eagles innings on the mercy rule.
The ball was given to Lucas Hunter to open the Eagles pitching, with Ethan Haylock behind the plate. Lucas started strongly, striking out the first Hawks batter with successive strikes. A narrow strike zone saw the Southern Districts #2 and #3 get to first on balls. Connor Foley, fielding at first base, then took a great fly ball catch in foul territory to get the second out. The Hawks #5 then drove a ball deep to right field, for an RBI double for the Hawks first run. The Hawks #6 then hit a high fly ball that Connor Foley also caught well into foul ball territory for the third out.
End of the first innings: West Torrens 7, Southern Districts 1.
Ethan Haylock came into bat at the top of the second. A great drive out to left field on the eighth pitch, saw Ethan get on to first. Brad Dedrick came into bat, and advanced to first on balls after the seventh pitch. Sam McGarry flied to third base for the first out. Duval was thrown four straight balls that brought about a pitching change for the Hawks. With bases loaded, Connor Foley was then advanced to first on balls, for the Eagles to score their first run of the innings. Another great line drive by Nathan Byrnes brought Dedrick home and Hambly’s base on balls saw Duval score. Mason Pickard then drove an RBI single (Foley). A patient Lucas Hunter then hit to centre field on the seventh pitch he faced for a RBI single. A great 3 base hit to right field by Ethan Haylock brought 3 players homes, but only 2 counted as the seven run mercy rule was again invoked.
Lucas Hunter returned to the mound for the Eagles, and struck out the Hawks first batter. Jack Hambly then caught the second batter with a solid catch at centre field. The Hawks number 9 batter was then walked, but was soon out caught stealing.
End of the second innings: West Torrens 14, Southern Districts 1.
Will Bouchier replaced Brad Dedrick in the batting lineup, and advanced to first on balls in a disciplined at bat. Sam McGarry then hit a head-high drive that was superbly caught at third base, and then quickly threw to first before Will had returned to the base for the double play. Mitch Duval drove a single to left field and then Connor Foley drove a ball that was well caught by the Hawk’s short stop.
Lucas was replaced on the mound by Mitch Duval, for his first pitch of the season. The first Hawks batter advanced on balls before Mitch struck back to have the next batter fielded out. The #3 batter then drove a single to get on base and advance the runner to second. Another base on balls saw the Hawks bases loaded, and another walk scored the Hawks second run of the match. Jack Hambly then caught another fine catch at centre field, and only just failed in stopping the Hawks player scoring at home. The Hawks #7 batter then drove past second base for a single, followed by Jack Hambly’s third catch of the match to end the Southern Districts innings.
End of the third innings: West Torrens 14, Southern Districts 3.
At the top of the fourth innings, Nathan Byrnes was adjudged just short of the base for the first out. Jack Hambly continued his fine batting display for a 2 base double. Mason Pickard then advanced on balls and Lucas Hunter drove to right field for a 2RBI single. The Eagles innings ended when Ethan Haylock drove a ball that was adjudged to have hit Lucas Hunter.
Connor Foley came to the mound to close the game. Mitch Duval took a great running “Inspector Gadget” catch at short stop to get the first out of the innings. Connor then struck out the Hawk’s #1 batter for the second out. The #2 then got to first base on a safe hit. Ethan Haylock then caught a pitch from Foley to the Hawks #3, turned and threw to Hunter at first, to find the Hawks batter still off the base in what can only be described as the “Play of the day”. This capped off an excellent catching performance by Ethan to finish the match.
End of the fourth innings: West Torrens 16, Southern Districts 3.
Summary: The West Torrens team displayed another excellent exhibition of baseball, with solid batting and pitching and some outstanding fielding. The batters were patient at the plate, waiting for the right ball to hit, then hitting strongly. The pitchers again threw strongly and kept the opposition batters struggling to hit. Special mention must be made of the errorless fielding display, with all the Eagles players fielding exceptionally well.
Hits: Haylock (3), Hunter (3), Byrnes (2), Hambly (2), Duval (1), Foley (1), Pickard (1).
Runs: Hambly (3), Byrnes (2), Duval (2), Foley (2), Haylock (2), Pickard (2), Dedrick (1), Hunter (1).

The top placed West Torrens Under 14 (1) team played the highly ranked Sturt team (3rd on the ladder after round 1) on Sunday in a traditional “top of the ladder” match-up, played in windy conditions at home. The home team displayed another excellent exhibition of baseball, with controlled pitching, solid batting and some good base running.
The Eagles opened up with Jack Hambly on the plate for his first pitch of the season and Ethan Haylock behind the plate. Jack threw a solid pitching display, and was well supported by his catcher and fielders. Hambly got the first out with a fly ball to Foley at centre field. Sturt then managed to get their next two batters on base, before Hambly struck back, with a fly ball out to McGarry at second and great throw from Dedrick (at third) to Hunter (at first) finishing the Saints innings, with no runs on the board.
Mason Pickard opened the innings for the home team, advancing to first on a walk. Lucas Hunter, at the number two spot, then drove a double to bring Mason home and start the Eagles rally. Sturt managed to get on top of our batting line-up momentarily, getting the next two batters (Haylock and Dedrick) out. Sam McGarry then continued on his fine form from last week with a RBI double to get the second run on the board. Mitch Duval followed at the #6 position and advanced to first base on balls. In the meantime McGarry stole to third and scored on a passed ball. Foley came to plate and droved the first ball back to the pitcher, who got a standard 1-3 out.
End of the 1st innings: Sturt 0, West Torrens 3.
Hambly returned to the plate and continued his great pitching display—striking out the first batter, getting the second batter out on a fly ball to Byrnes at left field, and then Jack stopped a line drive to get the regulation 1-3 out. Side away in 10 pitches.
Nathan Byrnes came to the plate and hit a fly to right field for the first out. Jack Hambly watched the first three pitches called for balls, then hit a safe two base hit (despite being called by coach Green to take the fourth pitch!). After Pickard struck out, Hunter drove another two baser to get Hambly home. Haylock hit a great shot to centre field, but unfortunately was caught by the Sturt player.
End of the 2nd innings: Sturt 0, West Torrens 4.
Hambly’s return to the mound saw an almost identical result as his previous innings—striking out the first batter, a fly ball out to Byrnes at left field and then another 1-3 out to dismiss the Sturt side in 10 pitches again.
Brad Dedrick came up to bat at the bottom of the third, and was hit by a pitch to advance to first. McGarry then had a one base hit, and was followed by a beautifully laid bunt by Mitch Duval to advance the batters, while he got safely on base. Connor Foley then safely hit a one bagger, and some good base running saw Dedrick and McGarry get home. This was followed by a great drive to left field by Nathan Byrnes to bring Duval home. Jack Hambly’s great 2 base hit brought Foley and Byrnes across the plate. Some good fielding by the Sturt team then saw them recover to dismiss the next three batters at the top of the Eagles line-up.
End of the 3rd innings: Sturt 0, West Torrens 9.
Lucas Hunter came on to replace Jack Hambly. The first Sturt batter managed to hit safely, but Hunter maintained control of the mound, with strong support from the field. Mitch Duval—fielding at short stop—threw strongly to Foley at first base, to get the out, and then Foley fielded a ground ball to get the second out. However, Sturt opened their scorebook, when their runner crossed the plate. A diving throw from McGarry at second to first-baseman Foley got the third Sturt batter out.
The bottom of the fourth innings saw a change of Sturt pitchers. Dedrick was out on a fly to centre field, and McGarry was out on a 4-3 ground ball play. Duval managed to keep the Sturt pitcher working hard, getting a one base hit on the eighth pitch he faced. Will Bourchier—who replaced Foley in the line-up for his first hit out with the ones—then struck out.
End of the 4th innings: Sturt 1, West Torrens 9.
Hunter returned to the mound for a strikeout at the top of the 5th, before being replaced by Brad Dedrick. Dedrick struck out the second Sturt player of the innings and a fly ball to Hambly at first base closed the Sturt innings.
Byrnes opened the Eagles innings with a single base hit, before Hambly scored his third two-base hit of the match. Mason Pickard hit strongly, but a fly ball to second had him out. Hunter then drove a RBI single to start the scoreboard ticking again. Ethan Haylock then hit a two base RBI, Brad Dedrick hit a single RBI before Sam McGarry hit a sacrifice fly to score the fourth run of the innings. The innings closed when Duval hit an infield fly to first base.
End of the 5th innings: Sturt 1, West Torrens 13.

Eagles displayed a very strong batting exhibition, with all players
displaying good displine at the plate and some good base running.
The team opened the first innings with lead off batter Mason Pickard scoring
a treble off the second pitch of the match, and soon followed by a strong 2
