Round 1 Looms Large for A’s and B’s

by Simo

After a sound preseason including some solid hit outs vs Kensington, Woodville and an impromptu internal hit out last Thursday night, I feel the Div 1 team is well prepared for our first game vs Woodville at Woodville this Sunday at 3pm.

The road trip to Mt Gambier for 2 trial games vs Kensington was a great success in that it exposed some of our younger guys to senior level baseball for the first time. Although conditions were a little tough with drizzle most of the time I was quietly happy with the way the guys went about their business and the general intensity of both games.

The following weekend trial vs Woodville was up a notch again and gave us a good indication of what we will see from them this Sunday.

Final selection for Sunday was difficult with some line-ball decisions made on positions and it is now up to the players to show why they deserve to hold a place or why they deserve to gain a place depending on their performances in the coming weeks.

After the disappointment of not making the playoffs last season it’s imperative we get off to a strong start and I’m looking for players to rise to the challenge from the very first pitch to the very last.

Get down to Woodville this week to support both the 1′s and the 2′s.

 Go you Eagles.

The Eagles are nesting

by Simo

Hi folks. Welcome back to Baseball for the 2010/11 season and in particular to the West Torrens Baseball Club

Now that winter sports have largely concluded their seasons, I urge you all to cast aside the winter blues and greet spring with all the energy and enthusiasm you can muster.

The off season has seen your committee busy preparing for the coming summer. Rick Mead has taken over the mantle of Director of Baseball and he has been busy putting in place a panel of coaches, the envy of the League. Committed at this stage are:

Under 18: Brett Ettridge (in partnership with Dave Dunstall, Rick Mead and Warren Bullen)
Under 16: Rob Dineen and Grant Puckett
Under 14: Mark Duval
Little Lgue: Jamie Boydon, Tim Mead, Andrew Scott and Andrew Morgan

We will add teams at any level if we can get enough players to make a full extra team at that level

Junior Committee

The coming season will require quite a deal of background work, from team management, to match day set up, results management, coaching support, canteen support and so on. I have already had generous offers of assistance from a couple of people to rejoin a group that they contributed to last season, that group being the Junior Committee, but I invite you all to get involved with your local junior club by volunteering some time to be on the West Torrens Junior Baseball Committtee and have an influence on what happens at your baseball club.

If you would like to help by becoming a member of the Junior Committee then please contact me at mark.mcgarry@pulteney.sa.edu.au and I will include your name. The committee would meet once a month over the season.

Teams

We intend to run a full complement of Under age teams including Under 18, Under 16 Div 1, Under 14 Div 1 and possibly a Div 2 team, Little League Major and two Minor teams.

Registrations are open

It is imperative that you complete registration as soon as possible to assist the club with its planning.

Uniform Advice

A reminder to all first year Under 14 players that played in Little League ranks last season, the club provides your playing top, but you need to purchase your own pants from Greatrex or Emmsee (as do Under 16 players). Under 18 players are reminded that they need to purchase the full uniform and an away uniform if they are in the A grade squad as Div 1 and 2 have a home and away strip. They need to obtain a playing number from the Director of Baseball Rick Mead richard.mead@torchmaster.com.au or 0413 990 135

Pre-season – FOR ALL JUNIOR BASEBALLERS

All trainings will be held at West Torrens Baseball club.

Sundays 9am commenced September 12 and will continue until further notice.

New Players are always welcome. If you have a friend or know of a family with children interested in an becoming involved in an exciting team sport at a family oriented club, then do encourage them to join in as well.

Please direct any questions to me, and if you have any issues that I can help with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours in Baseball

Mark McGarry

Sam’s pre-season update

by Simo

It seems to come around faster each year, and here we go again. The boys have braved some pretty crappy conditions to be on the track Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights for the past month already. Even at this early stage it’s becoming clear which players are keen to claim positions and take their game to the next level this year. We are less than 2 months away from our first game and have plenty of work to do before then. Similar to last year opportunities will abound and positions will have to be earned. There will be no free rides.

I’m very pleased to have Clive Fiebig as my sidekick again this year. Clive will also bring his experience and insight to our pitching Program. I’m also very pleased to have Ken Kobayashi back as a full time assistant this year. Ken will apply his specialist coaching to our hitting and mental approach amongst other areas. Having the experience of both Clive and Ken will be invaluable in achieving our aim of having an impact in finals baseball this season. We have some preseason games lined up already including a trip to Mount Gambier on the 17/18th of September to play a Mount Gambier team and last year’s premiers Kensington. This hit out will give us a good indication of where we are at as a team.

Watch this space for more information as our preseason progresses.

Capps Medal Roundup

West Torrens has enjoyed another successful night at the Capps medal dinner presentation.  On an individual level the following were rewarded for their outstanding performances this season

  • Sam Tibbits – selected at first base in the Team of the Year
  • Jesse Duval – selected as Rookie of the Year for the Div 1 competition
  • Mark Henry – co-winner Div 2 medal
  • Ron Paulus – winner Div 6 medal

On a club level, Mark McGarry was presented with the Junior shield. This is the 4th year in a row that West Torrens has won this award and is testament to the development program we have.

To see how you went for the season visit all clubs votes. Both Senior and Junior votes are listed.

Also a reminder that the B grade have their Grand Final 2.00pm this Saturday at Glenelg. Get along and support the boys then head back to the Club after.

Another reminder that the Senior Presentation dinner is being held at the Clubrooms on Saturday night 11th April.
