Eagles U14-1 bats continue to sizzle
The 14 (1)s bats continued to sizzle when they played Woodville in the cool, windy—and sometimes rainy—conditions at home last Sunday.
The ball was given to Mitch Duval to start the pitching for the Eagles, and Sam McGarry was behind the plate for the first time this year.
The Senators batter opened up with some patient batting at the plate. The Senators #1, #3 and #4 batters all had safe one base hits. But some good pitching and fielding restricted Woodville to one run in the innings.
Nathan Byrnes opened the innings for the Eagles, and got on base with a safe hit to centre field. Lucas Hunter then hit a pitch to 2nd base, that saw Nathan Byrnes tagged out, although Lucas reached first. Ethan Haylock then drove a ball deep into right field for a 3 base RBI. Brad Dedrick hit a 2 base RBI to left field. This was followed by Jack Hambly’s fly to right field for the second out. Sam McGarry drove to centre field for a one base RBI before Connor Foley was out at first base.
End of 1st Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 3
The Senator’s #6 batter hit for a safe single baser to centre field. The #7 batter then flied to third base for a good catch by Brad Dedrick. Mitch Duval then struck out the #8 and #9 batters to end the innings in 17 pitches
Will Bourchier came to the plate for the Eagles, but was out on stikes. Mitch Duval was the second batter out in a good 5-3 play by the Senators. This brought the reliable Nathan Byrnes back to bat, who hit another safe one baser to centre field. Lucas Hunter was then walked on balls and Ethan Haylock was hit by a pitch to get bases loaded. Brad Dedrick was walked on balls, which brought Byrnes home for the first run of the innings. Jack Hambly then hit a solid hit to centre field for a one base 2 RBI hit. McGarry then hit to left field for a one baser and Foley was walked on balls, before Bourchier was fielded out at first base.
End of 2ndt Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 7
Lucas Hunter relieved Mitch Duval on the mound and Ethan Haylock relieved Sam McGarry as catcher. The Senator’s #1 batter was out in a good 6-3 play by the Eagles fielders. The #2 then drove a ball that was very well caught by Sam McGarry at short stop for the second out and the #3 was out caught by Lucas. Side away in 8 pitches.
Mitch Duval was at the first Eagles batter up, and drove a ball to centre field for a safe one baser (followed by a passed ball and a stolen base). Nathan Byrnes hit safely to right field for a one base RBI. Lucas Hunter then hit a one baser and Ethan Haylock was then walked on balls. Brad Dedrick hit to left field for a 2RBI single. Mason Pickard (replacing Jack Hambly), Sam McGarry, Connor Foley (RBI) and Will Bourchier (RBI) all hit safely for single bases. Mitch Duval returned to the plate but was out on a 6-3 play.
End of 3rd Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 12
Hunter continued the pitching for the Eagles and got the Senators #4 out on three consecutive strikes. The #5 was out on a well fielded 1-3 play and the #6 batter was walked. Lucas fielded well again to get the third out in another 1-3 play.
Back at the top of the Eagles batting line up, Byrnes fouled a ball that was well caught by the Senator’s catcher. Hunter and Haylock were both out at first base.
End of 4th Innings: Woodville 1, West Torrens 12
Brad Dedrick came to the mound to close. The Woodville #8 advanced to first on balls, followed by the #9 striking out. At the top of the line-up, the Senators #1 batter hit safely for a single base. Brad then had the #2 out in another good 1-3 play, although the #1 batter scored. The #3 then hit a RBI single, but was forced out at second on the #4’s hit.
Brad Dedrick was the first batter up, but was out on a 6-3 play and Mason Pickard was out at first. Sam McGarry then came to the plate and hit a double to centre field. Connor Foley then hit safely to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball, that saw McGarry score. The Eagles innings ended when Bourchier was struck out.
