Another 1 run loss for the A’s

by Simo on October 26th, 2009

The Division 1 side was defeated by a much improved Golden Grove 6-5 on Sunday. The Grovers have certainly turned into a hoodoo side for The Eagles in recent years and once again we returned from Illyarrie Reserve without the points. Dan Chapman had starting duties and apart from one wayward inning left the game after 5.3 innings of solid work in what was a pleasing outing for him. After trailing 4-0 he left the mound after our bats came to life against the GG import starter to even things up at 4 all. Steve O’Connor fresh from the airport after his Claxton Weekend took over duties and also looked solid. After giving up a run in the 7th the boys continued to push and tied the game in the 8th. However GG’s scored again bottom 8 and we were unable to plate a run top 9 ending the game. Our downfall was again not converting opportunities at the plate into runs, with several runners left on base. Some good hitting and better at bats later in the game against their quality starter was pleasing but did not reap the rewards required to win the game. The standout hitter was Tom Fiebig with 3 hits including a smashed double to right centre that sparked our comeback in the 5th. This Sunday we travel to East Torrens to take on the RedSox. Again, in a shortened format, early wins are essential and we’ll be looking for a victory to get the momentum back on our side of the ledger.
